The Best Ecommerce Platform of 2015

best ecommerce platform 2015

What platform should I build my ecommerce site with? If I had a dollar for every time an aspiring ecommerce entrepreneur asked me this I would have $671.

The truth is there is no one size fits all solution and no Cinderella solution that your business can just slip right into. It’s important not to let the overwhelming amount of choices give you an easy excuse to quit at the first hurdle.

If you do a quick Google search for the best ecommerce platform the 42 million results will leave you more confused than when you started.

So here in easy to understand English are my 3 top picks for the Best Ecommerce Platform of 2015:

1. Shopify

Shopify is an easy to use all-in-one hosted solution. Save time worrying about hosting providers, server settings and concentrate on increasing sales. You don’t need the programming skills of Mark Zuckerburg to make your store functional and beautiful, with hundreds of sexy designs to choose from, built in marketing features and payment gateways.

Andrew Youderian, the founder of the insanely helpful Ecommerce community Ecommerce Fuel recently completed a $50k migration of his online shop Right Channel Radios from Magento to Shopify.

Pro Tip: My SEO mentor and buddy Jonny Dawson from Digital Ninjas has expressed concerns in the past over Shopify’s shared serves negatively affecting page speed load times, which in turn negatively affects the user experience and SEO standing of the website. Do you have any experience with this? Let me know in the comments section below.

3 Awesome Shopify sites:

Black Milk Clothing

Pure Fix Cycles

Trivsam

2. Woocommerce

Woocommerce is the free ecommerce solution spawning from WordPress, the platform that now powers nearly 25% of the world’s websites.

Woocommerce is fast, lightweight, customizable, user friendly and comes with the best support community on the web. It is known for being SEO-friendly and will help you achieve your childhood dream of getting on the first page of Google.

And because WordPress is the most popular website platform, there are thousnads of themes and plugins available to help you dominate your market.

3 Awesome Woocommerce sites:

Grand St

Zanerobe

Premier Sports Memorabilia (shameless plug for my ecommerce website)

3. Magento

Not to be confused with the mutant Magneto, this ecommerce platform is equally powerful.

Magento is an open source ecommerce platform that’s ideal for businesses with large catalogues of 1000+ products. It offers unlimited customizations for FREE, but you will need a Magento developer that can become expensive. This platform is the least user friendly of the 3 options and suited to the experienced e-commerce owner.

3 Awesome Magento sites:

Nike

Harpers Bazaar

Giro

So what makes me an authority to advise you on which platform to dive into?

dr evil 1 million dollarsAfter selling close to 1 million dollars’ worth of merchandise through Ecommerce, I have experience with many platforms. From my very first online shop that I coded in html, to my recent migration to Woocommerce, Ecommerce has consistently kept me up late at night (but also made me lots of cheddar).

The real reason you should consider listening to my rantings is that I’m a real person just like you. I don’t have millions to spend developing a custom online store and I like to launch fast and lean which is possible with the 3 platforms I have reviewed.
